On most grazing properties, the plan lives on a whiteboard in the shed, the records live in a notebook in the ute, and the spreadsheet gets updated when someone has time. Below, a fictional property near Macedon runs it all from one map: where every mob is, what's resting, what's been checked and what can be sold.

Every screen is a decision about how the work runs
The farm on one map
Every paddock coloured by what it's doing: grazing, resting, ready or locked up for hay. Tap one for its area, pasture, feed on offer, water points and the mob in it.
Grazing you can plan
Move a mob and the old paddock starts counting rest days while the new one starts counting grazing days. Rotations stop depending on memory.
Records from where the work happens
The water run, rain gauge and stock checks are logged on a phone in the paddock, and sync when the phone finds signal. The shed whiteboard catches up by itself.
Withholding periods that actually block sale
Treatments are recorded with the product's withholding period and export slaughter interval, and the mob can't be marked sale-ready until both are clear. It's the check that protects the next National Vendor Declaration.
Movements prepared, not typed twice
For a clear mob, the movement summary and tag list are prepared from records already kept, ready for the transfer to be recorded in the NLIS database.
Rainfall and history over time
Monthly rainfall, paddock history and treatment records build up season by season, which is the history you need for planning, sale and succession.

A custom app makes sense for larger or unusual operations, several people recording in the paddock, or when you need it to connect to sensors and systems a platform won't.

Common questions
It records where each mob is, how paddocks are being grazed and rested, water and rainfall checks, and animal treatments. Most also help prepare sale and movement paperwork, and keep a history of every paddock and mob over time.
The minimum time between treating an animal with a veterinary chemical and slaughtering it for meat, set on the product label. An export slaughter interval is the equivalent for export markets. Livestock can't be sold for slaughter until both are clear.
Yes, if they're built offline-first. Records are saved on the phone and synced when it finds signal, which matters on properties where coverage drops out in the back paddocks.
The National Livestock Identification System records each animal's movements between properties. Transfers are recorded in the NLIS database; a farm app can prepare the movement details and tag lists from records already kept, so nothing is typed twice.
Not by default. Off-the-shelf platforms are capable and suit many operations. A custom app makes sense when your operation doesn't fit their model, several people need a simpler phone app, or you need connections to sensors and systems they don't offer.
